The 23 man squad was announced at 1pm this afternoon, it was doing the rounds on Twitter last night that Rio Ferdinand wouldn’t make the cut, with John Terry being the preferred choice. Unfortunately this turned out to be true, and late this evening Rio took to Twitter to express his disappointment.
“Absolutely loved playing for england….to say I’m gutted is an understatement of the highest order…” I’m gutted for him, he more than deserved a place on the plane, he’s had a great, injury free season and playing with that calmness we expect from him, so for him to miss out must be a huge disappointment.
The other surprise is Michael Carrick’s exclusion, with players like Gareth Barry, Scott Parker, and Steven Gerrard who has barely played any football this season is ahead of him. Even Jordan Henderson has made the backup list in front of him. Time and time again he is overlooked for the squad and it must be extremely frustrating for him, but from a Utd point of view it means he can have a nice rest this summer and be fresh for us for the new Premier League campaign.
Woy seemingly is going to do the same as many managers before him, and take players based on their reputation, even City’s Micah Richards, who couldn’t possibly do anything more to prove he deserves a call up, has missed out, as the new England manager opted for Glen Johnson and Phil Jones instead.
The England squad in full:
Goalkeepers: Joe Hart, Rob Green, John Ruddy
Defenders: Glen Johnson, Phil Jones, John Terry, Joleon Lescott, Gary Cahill, Ashley Cole, Leighton Baines
Midfielders: Theo Walcott, Stewart Downing, Alex Oxlaide-Chamberlain, Steven Gerrard, Gareth Barry, James Milner, Frank Lampard, Ashley Young, Scott Parker
Strikers: Wayne Rooney, Jermaine Defoe, Danny Welbeck, Andy Caroll
Standby List: Jack Butland, Phil Jagielka, Jordan Henderson, Adam Johnson, Daniel Sturridge
