For Manchester United, the midfield area is becoming a major issue. No signings were made in that area of the field, despite the fact that both Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini have been let go.
The pressure, as always, is solely on Paul Pogba’s shoulders. With the Frenchman having a relatively young midfield group in and around him, it’s going to be a long, arduous season.
United have one wildcard; Fred. The Brazil international struggled to acquit himself in his debut season and is yet to feature this term. However, despite rumours linking him with a move away from Old Trafford – he has no plans to go anywhere…
The story comes from the Manchester Evening News, who writes that the midfielder has no intention of leaving this summer, and he’s working hard to force his way back into the team.
Apparently, the player himself has organised additional fitness work, as he looks to enhance his conditioning via personal sessions; starting next month.
With Fred’s focus on durability, being available week-in-week-out is a key asset. Making the jump from the Ukrainian league was always going to take time but it’s nice to see the Brazilian doing what he can to force his way back into proceedings.
I feel as if Scott McTominay and Pogba are dead-certs to play, but that third midfield spot is up for grabs. You have Fred and Andreas Pereira vying for that place within the team and I genuinely believe the former has a real opportunity to prove his worth after the international break.
