It doesn’t look like Man United will be signing Frenkie de Jong this coming summer.
Unless you were living under a rock last summer, you’ll know that Manchester United spent an awful lot of time chasing the signature of Frenkie de Jong.
The Dutchman, who plies his trade for FC Barcelona, was up for sale due to financial worries at the Catalan club. However, the player made it clear from the outset that he had no intentions of leaving.
In the end, United saw a bid for De Jong accepted, though the player flat-out refused the move. Fair play as loyalty is rare in football these days.
Many believed that another effort from United will come in a few months. However, those rumours have been quashed early – by the man himself.
The long-term United target has all-but ended Reds transfer speculation, claiming that he will not move to the club this summer. Sure, he didn’t completely rule out a transfer, but it seemed a pretty adamant ‘no’ answer from De Jong.
Check out what Frenkie de Jong had to say in full here:
“No, I don’t think so. You never know of course. But I’m very happy in Barcelona.” De Jong is quoted as saying, per the Manchester Evening News.
Although this is a bitter blow, as someone like De Jong would have been perfect for this midfield, at least United know where they stand nice and early. This time around, they won’t be chasing an unobtainable target.
De Jong has become a key player for Barca and perhaps they’ll now look to offload other possible players this coming summer as their money problems still remain.
That does mean a need for a De Jong-esque player still remains. United need someone who can keep things ticking over, sitting in next to someone like Casemiro with a more attack-minded Bruno Fernandes in front of him. It’s quite a distinct player profile, so I’m not actually sure who’d fit the bill…
