Frenkie de Jong ‘flattered’ by Man United interest

Frenkie de Jong was asked directly about Man United’s keenness on signing him this summer.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock over the last few weeks, the rumours linking Frenkie de Jong to Manchester United just aren’t going away.

The Dutchman previously admitted his preference to remain with the Catalan outfit, though in the end, Barcelona may be forced into parting with the midfielder due to their horrendous financial troubles.

United’s lack of Champions League football has always felt like a problem from my point of view. After all, De Jong would attract interest from all the major clubs in world football if it’s publicised that he’s a signable entity this summer.

Well, the man himself has now spoken out. De Jong has admitted he’s ‘flattered’ by the interest in him from United amid these consistent transfer links.

Again, though, De Jong has also stated that he’s at the ‘biggest club’ in the world at the moment and he’s happy there. That should be worrying to the Old Trafford club.

Asked about Man United’s interest in him, De Jong responded:

‘You’re always flattered when teams show interest in you as a player but I am at the biggest club in the world at the moment and I feel fine there, so no news.’

If De Jong genuinely believe he’s at the biggest club, the only way is down, right? It’s never going to get better for him than playing for Barca, so I’d imagine he’s going to dig his heels in and do everything he can to ensure he remains at the Camp Nou beyond this window.

I actually can’t fault him for that. The heart wants what the heart wants. However, if that’s the case, United should quit wasting time on trying to sign a player who could potentially be unobtainable. At the very least, there needs to be some sort of firm deadline set by United, at which point they move on to other targets if this saga hasn’t taken some major steps forward.

There’s no doubt De Jong would be an incredible signing. Reuniting him with both Ten Hag and Donny van de Beek could lead to our midfield being single-handedly transformed into a competent one at least.

Sadly, I just think United are up against it here. In the end, this feels like a losing battle.

Do you think Frenkie de Jong would be a good signing for Man United? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.

  1. Why is all Erik Tag’s signings not working. Everything in the beginning sounded so positive of him bringing all his players but now not even one seems likely. I cannot understand how United work on the transfers. They miss out on all good transfers because of making up their minds.
Whereas we were seeing how all the big clubs are going forward and striking their deals. It looks like we are in the dumps again.
