Reported Man United transfer target, Frenkie de Jong, is in regular conversation with Erik ten Hag.
The Manchester United transfer links with Frenkie de Jong have been endless. I guess it was an easy story to make, given the midfielder worked so well under Erik ten Hag during their time together at Ajax, coupled with Barcelona’s financial difficulties.
Ten Hag’s strategy seems clear; surround himself with familiarity and comfort. It’s an astute plan for any manager in new surroundings, though there’s no doubt De Jong feels like the player our new Dutch boss is most desperate to acquire.
The pendulum has swung back and forth in regards to De Jong’s possible Old Trafford switch. From initially not being a fan of the idea, to warming to a reunion with Ten Hag, with a little uncertainty sandwiched in the middle.
Well, the latest update in the saga comes from Gerard Romero. Though I’m not sure whether it’s a positive one or not…
Romero took to Twitter to confirm that Ten Hag ‘speaks daily’ to De Jong, though United’s last offer €87m (£74m) wasn’t structured how Barca would like.
United offered €65m up front, with €22m to follow in add-ons and bonuses. Barca would prefer another €75m up front, with just €12m to come later. Either way, a package of around £74m should be enough to acquire De Jong.
There’s no doubt that De Jong would become the poster boy of this new-look United team if the club could somehow get this deal done.
Though I have to be honest, I still have doubts. I feel like De Jong’s preference is to still remain at Barcelona, which leaves me wondering whether United are wasting so much time chasing a lost cause.
I’d like to think that’s not the case, and I don’t doubt De Jong would give it his all if he does sign. I just wouldn’t want United ending up with egg on their face.
