Man United still have their sights set on FC Barcelona midfielder, Frenkie de Jong.
Over the summer, Manchester United spent an awful lot of time chasing Frenkie de Jong. The midfielder, who had previously worked with Erik ten Hag at Ajax, was placed up for sale by FC Barcelona due to their financial circumstances.
Ironically, the Dutch playmaker didn’t want to leave the Camp Nou due to their Champions League participation. United have since dumped Barca out of European football altogether for this term.
According to Sport (h/t the BBC gossip column on 1st March), United still have eyes on De Jong. Apparently, the 25-year-old still remains a United transfer target going into the all-important summer window.
Barca’s money struggles still remain, which could lead to the Red Devils reviving their interest in a man who Ten Hag seemingly has massive plans for here in Manchester.
For anyone who watched the double-header against Barca, you’ll know De Jong’s qualities. The midfielder was arguably their best player over the two legs, proving instrumental in their build-up from that deep role.
Undoubtedly, De Jong would add another dimension to this United midfielder that has vastly improved over the last six months. Imagine him sitting in next to Casemiro, with Bruno Fernandes in front of them? Wow.
I still genuinely think there’s a chance that this deal does happen, particularly if United can make it into the Champions League for next season. De Jong witnessed first hand just how tactically-brilliant Ten Hag can be. That’s exactly what you need to win the biggest prizes in world football.
This certainly feels like a transfer rumour that we should all be keeping our eyes on.
