Gary Neville explains what Anthony Martial needs to add to his game

Manchester United’s on-field struggles this season have been evident. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer did well initially, but after the honeymoon period was over, the stark reality is that this squad isn’t good enough.

Despite having a plethora of top-class forwards, United just look toothless at times, that’s without doubt their main problem. Amongst the issues is work ethic. So often it just seems as though there is an alarming lack of movement, meaning the midfielders are struggling to find the right pass.

Perhaps the biggest culprit of that is Anthony Martial. For all his on-ball talent and ability, the Frenchman just doesn’t seem to want to put in the work and effort. Now, Gary Neville has told him he needs to add that to his game, similarly to how Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah are always on the move…

“I look at Anthony Martial who plays in fits and starts,” said per the Manchester Evening News.

“You think about the number of runs Mane and Salah make behind the centre-backs, Martial doesn’t do that.

“Martial likes to play when he’s got the ball. I don’t see him running enough without the ball.”

The video above is just damning. This is a professional footballer who just doesn’t want to work hard. I understand that he was a substitute but he could have been called upon at any moment. That’s not the attitude you want to display.

Once again, United have found themselves getting exposed because Martial has been handed a new long-term deal at Old Trafford, while the real superstars of this club (De Gea and Herrera) are both refusing to commit. That alone tells you everything you need to know.

I just hope that Martial at least tries to add work-rate to his game over the summer. He’ll certainly need to if he wants to work within Solskjaer’s high-intensity system.
