Gary Neville has been pleased with what he’s seeing from Diogo Dalot recently.
Here at Old Trafford Faithful, we love to be proven wrong if it means Manchester United success. Diogo Dalot is someone who is well on the way to achieving that.
A couple of years ago, I’d completely written off the man from Portugal as someone who blatantly wasn’t good enough. However, under Erik ten Hag, Dalot has been on an upward trajectory. There’s no doubt about that.
The last couple of weeks, in particular, have really showcased his qualities and ability. Dalot has made some goal-saving tackles, done his defensive duties well, while also whipping in that insane cross to Scott McTominay for the winner away at Aston Villa.
While we still need to see more consistency from the Jose Mourinho signing, he’s certainly giving us every reason to be hopeful.
Who else knows more about being a successful Premier League right-back than Gary Neville? Even the United legend has heaped praise on the in-form Reds star, claiming they may have found a player for ‘the future’ in Dalot.
Check out what Gary Neville had to say in full here:
“I want to talk a little bit about Dalot,” Neville is quoted as saying by ManUtd.com.
“Because Dalot is someone that people say about [when they discuss] the right-back for the future for Manchester United. They might have the right-back for the future there.
“There is a lot there: he’s six foot; he’s strong; he’s powerful; he’s good on the ball; he’s not a bad defender. I think he defends his back post really well. He opens up his shoulders.”
We’re certainly quick to judge underperforming players, so it’s nice to see Dalot earn the praise his recent performances absolutely deserve.
I’m not quite sure what’s happened, but he’s suddenly stepped it up considerably. Be it due to the fact he’s finally been given a run of games, Ten Hag working out how to best utilise the player, or maybe a combination of the two, who knows? Who cares? All that matters is he’s playing well.
The knock on Dalot has always been consistency. That’s his next task. It’s up to the Portugal international to do all he can to keep up this good form, without vacating his place in the starting line-up to an Aaron Wan-Bissaka who is no doubt chomping at the bit for his opportunity.
If Dalot can continue this form for the remainder of the season, I see no reason why Ten Hag cannot continue to trust the ex-Porto man for many years to come. It would be a pleasant surprise, while also potentially saving the club plenty of money in that area of the field.
