Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure, Manchester United have largely struggled, particularly in the bread and butter competition; the Premier League.
With Jose Mourinho at the helm, it certainly looks as though the Red Devils are back on the rise, but after spending huge amounts of money since, former United player Gary Neville claims the Old Trafford club only have one world-class player.
The former right-back didn’t mention Paul Pogba’s name whatsoever, although he did say that Alexis Sanchez could become a Manchester United great. Instead, he singled out David de Gea; who’s probably the best goalkeeper in world football.
“De Gea’s the only world-class player Manchester United have got. You could maybe say Sanchez but not at Manchester United yet, even if he has been at a level for the last five or six years that you would say is world class,” Neville told Goal, per the Manchester Evening News.
“But De Gea’s the only player Manchester United have got at this moment in time that I would say has performed for the club at a world-class level.
In all honesty, it’s tough to disagree with the Sky Sports commentator, who’s always remained fair when talking about his former employers. Neville continued to talk further in depth about the United squad, then began discussing Antonio Valencia who has been stunning over the last few seasons.
“The other player I would say that has done brilliantly well, whether you could say he’s world class or not, is Antonio Valencia over the last two or three years. He’s been outstanding.
“But to me, De Gea is their stand-out player in terms of world standard at the club without a shadow of a doubt.”
You can dress it up however you like, but he’s right. De Gea has been our only player performing at world-class level over the last few years. He’s just an insanely gifted individual who’s saved United points aplenty single-handedly.
He needs help, though, and if United are to win the Premier League trophy once again, they need Sanchez to reach the dizzy heights we all know he’s capable of. They also require Pogba to rediscover the brilliant form he showed during his time out in Italy.
