Manchester United came crashing down to earth away at FC Barcelona last night. Lionel Messi and company are just far better than the players that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has at his disposal, and it showed.
From first minute United were outclassed. This squad needs a massive overhaul, there are just far too many underperformers getting regular starts at the moment.
Amongst those is Paul Pogba. The Mercurial Frenchman continues to frustrate. He’s either brilliant or bang-average, and recently, it has been the latter, particularly when we need him the most.
It’s also a view echoed by Gary Neville. The United legend was quick to reiterate his belief that Pogba is a great player, although it’s pretty damning that the pundit labelled the Frenchman as looking disinterested at times.
“Pogba’s now playing how he was pre-Ole’s arrival.” Neville told BeIN Sports, transcribed by The Sun.
“I thought he was really poor, rolling his foot over the ball all the time, playing for himself, not popping it off and moving, didn’t look interested at times.
“But he’s a great player, and can be a great player, he just needs to get that focus back.”
If he wants to be amongst the best players in the world, Pogba needs to start performing better in the big matches. I can count his good games against the elite teams on one hand, that’s nowhere near good enough given he has been here for almost three seasons now.
He had a great couple of months when Solskjaer took charge but it does feel as though he has regressed back to his old self. Even against West Ham at the weekend, he may have scored twice but they were both penalties and they covered up another mediocre outing.
I just hope that he now has a good end to the season. The 26-year-old must finish strong, particularly if he eventually wants to secure himself a move to Real Madrid because he seems to like talking about that. Right now, though, I’m not convinced they’d want him…
