Manchester United could well unveil Harry Maguire as their third summer signing at some point today, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer finally set to be delivered the top-class centre-back that he has craved…
After shipping 54 league goals last term you always felt like the Red Devils would be in the market for a top-level defender. Well, it took longer than we’d have liked but Maguire is the man United have chosen.
Although not official yet, it seems as though Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola knows more than we do, with the ex-Barcelona manager congratulating United on the acquisition of ‘Slabhead’… He also, quite oddly, claimed that the blues ‘could not afford it’…
“We were interested but could not afford it.” Guardiola told reporters, including the BBC. “United could afford it. He had an incredible World Cup. He’s strong in the air, good with the ball and builds it up, he’s so fast. He’s young. Congratulations to United.”
To receive such praise from one of the best in the business will be a nice confidence-booster for Maguire, and perhaps City couldn’t afford it due to Financial Fair Play restrictions.
Either way, I’m glad that United went that extra mile to sign Maguire because he will have an impact on this team in more ways than one. Not only is he a top-level defender, he’ll also bring leadership to the table. That’s something we’ve desperately craved for since Rio Ferdinand left and it could make all the difference…
