Guillem Balague: Man United willing to pay £53million for talented defender

Manchester United Football Club are set for another big spending summer, as Jose Mourinho continues to mould the squad to suit his image.

Amongst the requirements is a new central defender. The Red Devils are crying out for at least one top-level centre-half, perhaps two if Eric Bailly cannot get himself fit.

Sky Sports’ Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has had his say on the situation, and he reckons that one man United could be interested in signing is FC Barcelona’s Samuel Umtiti.

Apparently, Jose Mourinho would be willing to pay £53million to sign him, but the Frenchman has reduced his contractual demands, and he could still re-sign with the Catalan giants.

“Contrary to reports, Manchester United are still willing to pay €60m [£53m] for him,” Balague told a Sky Sports Q&A.

“But Umtiti has since reduced his demands and the conversations with Barcelona are more fluid than they were a few months ago.”

I’d love to see Umtiti at Old Trafford. He’s a front-footed defender who’d complement the aforementioned Bailly brilliantly. Amongst his attributes, he’s immensely quick, tough in the tackle and pretty good in the air.

With that said, I’d have some serious doubts about the likelihood of the move happening. Why would he leave a place where trophies are almost guaranteed every single season to come to a side where a Premier League title would be hard to come by…
