Harry Maguire doubtful for EURO 2020 opener with ankle injury

Key Man United star, Harry Maguire, is an injury doubt for England’s EURO 2020 opener on June 13th.

After missing the Europa League final, Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has been selected for England ahead of the European Championships.

I guess the fact that the 28-year-old took his place on the bench for the showpiece had us all thinking he was closer to returning than many of us thought.

Well, a week later and it looks as though the issue is still causing Maguire major issues. The key United star has been named as an injury doubt for the EURO 2020 opener vs Croatia, Gareth Southgate has confirmed.

Here’s what Southgate had to say on the Maguire injury:

“It is going to be tight for the first game, there is no question.” Southgate told reporters, including Sky Sports.

“He is such a good player and because we had the additional size of squad, we wanted to take that opportunity to bring him into the squad.”

While I firmly believe Maguire is the Three Lions’ best centre-half when fit, the United man doesn’t seem even remotely close to that stage.

With less than a couple of weeks before England’s opener against Croatia, Maguire is in a real race against time.

For us, it’s United first and foremost. I’d be lying if I said I’m not concerned about his health ahead of the 2021/22 term. This is United’s leader. United’s captain. United’s best defender. We’re going to need him if we have genuine aspirations to win the league next season.

From Maguire’s standpoint, you can understand his desire to play in the European Championships as it’d be his first as a player. Factor in England having a decent opportunity at doing well and I guess he was always going to put his body on the line to ensure he was selected.

I just hope no risks are being taken by Southgate. If he’s not fully fit, don’t risk him, heck, don’t even let him train. Even if it means Maguire missing the group stage games, at the end of the day, it’s United who pays his wages so they should have final say.
