Man United are looking set to welcome Harry Maguire back from injury next time out against Aston Villa.
Ralf Rangnick’s Manchester United side lost their first game against Wolverhampton Wanderers – in a game during which the Reds were far from their best.
They’d play that game without club captain Harry Maguire, who was sidelined with an injury he picked up in the game prior.
Credit where it’s due, Phil Jones did well in the absence of Maguire – though we’re light in that area of the field, particularly with Eric Bailly now with the Ivory Coast ahead of AFCON.
Well, the Reds have been boosted according to The Athletic. The key United star is ‘in line’ for a return from injury against Aston Villa in the FA Cup on Monday.
Maguire was dealing with a minor rib injury, but that problem is thought to have healed by the time Steven Gerrard heads to Old Trafford this coming Monday evening.
It’s pretty common knowledge that Maguire has come in for heavy criticism from fans recently, for his poor performances. Many of those outcries from fans have been warranted.
However, it’s also common knowledge that Maguire still makes up half of our best centre-back pairing alongside Raphael Varane. That could well change if Victor Lindelof can string a good run of performances together, but as things stand, I’d still stick with the Englishman.
Maguire is far from perfect but right now, he looks like someone playing with low confidence. With a good few games under his belt and United keeping a couple of clean sheets on the spin, that could all change.
I still think in the long run, United will look to replace Maguire. Though with him currently holding the captain’s armband, that just further complicates things…
