Harry Maguire picked up an injury in training, hence why he wasn’t involved against Spurs last night.
Manchester United took on Spurs last night in a Premier League game with genuine significance.
Ahead of the game, there was a notable absence from the playing squad; Harry Maguire.
With United looking thin on the ground at the back, Maguire’s inclusion in the squad felt like a guarantee. There was a good chance he was going to start this game.
However, eyebrows were raised when the team news was announced and Maguire wasn’t even in the squad at all.
Now we know why. According to BBC journalist Simon Stone, the United player picked up a training ground injury. The Reds are now light in the vital position, with Victor Lindelof the only recognised centre-back who is fit.
I know Maguire isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, though having him fit for the run-in is vital, particularly with Lisandro Martinez out for the season and Raphael Varane out for the foreseeable.
Yes, you have Luke Shaw who can stand in when required, but even he has been hobbling about and fighting through the pain barrier recently.
It can’t be a coincidence that players are dropping left, right and centre at the moment, after playing so many games this season due to the winter World Cup. It’s now starting to catch up with the United lads at the worst possible moment.
Maguire excels in some games, but struggles in others. As an option to have, he’s by no means the worst. Put it this way, I’d rather have him fit than out injured – even if there’s a chance he’s sold this summer.
