Harry Maguire pictured in Man United training pre-Aston Villa

Harry Maguire has been sighted in Man United training, ahead of the Reds’ cup game vs Aston Villa.

Manchester United’s defence has been anything but watertight this season. Despite the arrival of Raphael Varane.

There’s no doubt that when fit, the Frenchman is comfortably our best defender. He plays with a calmness, a presence, a genuine quality.

It’s now about identifying his long-term partner. Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly and even Phil Jones have started alongside Varane so far this term. Though the centre-back combination is all about familiarity and consistency.

Ralf Rangnick has to identify the best fit as quickly as possible. With Harry Maguire still holding the captain’s armband, it’s hard to look beyond the Englishman who has been out injured recently.

While speaking to the media, Rangnick confirmed that Maguire was touch-and-go for the Reds’ next game on Monday night.

However, United appear to have been boosted, with the key star back in training yesterday. Thanks to our friends over at StrettyNews with the scoop.

Whether or not Maguire has enough training under his belt to start under the Old Trafford floodlights tomorrow evening is another matter entirely.

However, this can only be viewed as a positive. Lindelof isn’t 100% fit following his bout of Covid-19, it may be tough for Jones to play two games in a row after so long out, while Bailly is away at AFCON.

I get that Maguire’s had his own on-field issues this term, making it easy to forget how solid he’s been for the most part.

Even if Maguire isn’t the man who’ll make up half of our back two in the long-term, he’s going to be a massively important player for us in the 2021/22 season.
