Manchester United’s season ended sooner than we would have liked, with Sevilla breaking hearts in a hard-fought Europa League semi-final. Now, captain Harry Maguire has sent a heartfelt message to the fans…
After signing from Leicester City in an £80million deal, Maguire has transformed this United back line. Sure, he had help from Aaron Wan-Bissaka, though ‘Slabhead’s’ presence back there has been a positive one.
Yeah, mistakes have been made along the way, though on the whole, Maguire has been a solid defender – who has worn that captain’s armband with pride.
We’re a better side with him in it, that can’t be questioned. Anyway, like a captain, Maguire hasn’t hidden away after a poor result for United. Instead, he’s taking it on the chin and trying to learn from that experience.
After 24-hours to let the result sink in, Maguire has taken to Twitter to send a heartfelt message to the United fans. He certainly comes across as super-genuine.
It certainly is tough to take, but United are on the up. Three semi-finals and a third-placed finish is better than we were all expecting this term. Yes, it would have been great to win a trophy, but we made too many mistakes when the lights were at their brightest.
I don’t doubt this young squad will learn from that and come back even stronger next term. As Maguire alludes to, we all can’t wait to get back into Old Trafford – though it’ll probably be a fair while yet before we can cheer on our heroes live and in the flesh.
Now it’s about resting up and preparing for a 2020/21 term that gets underway in less than a month. Before then, I think we’d all love to see some new faces come in through the doors.
One thing’s for certain, though, Maguire will be at the heart of our defence again next term. I still can’t understand people who doubt a man who made it into the BBC’s Team of the Year…
