Manchester United are still looking to earn their first win of 2020, after three sub-par performances to bring in the new year. However, they have a great opportunity with Norwich City visiting Old Trafford this weekend.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side desperately needs to put in a dominant performance, in order to prove that victories against City and Spurs weren’t just fluked towards the back end of 2019.
However, United will have to do it without one of their key centre-backs; Harry Maguire. Solskjaer confirmed the injury blow to the 26-year-old after the Red Devils’ Carabao Cup loss to City, although the problem isn’t thought to be a long-term one.
“We don’t know. It is not going to be a long term one.” Solskjaer told reporters, including the Evening Standard.
“But I don’t think he will be ready for the weekend. Let’s see.”
Maguire’s absence was dearly felt at Old Trafford last night – that’s despite the fact that Slabhead probably hasn’t been consistent enough to start his United career.
When you’ve got Phil Jones deputising it becomes an even bigger problem. Simply put, the former Blackburn man just isn’t good enough, though at least he was available unlike Marcos Rojo, Axel Tuanzebe and Eric Bailly.
All this does is further highlights what a mess this squad is in right now. Solskjaer started the clearout over the summer, however, there is still much work ahead. He’s going to need time, but he’ll probably have to put his trust in Jones again this weekend against The Canaries…
