Manchester United finally look to be closing in on their third summer signing – and it’s a big one.
According to the Manchester Evening News, United have agreed a world-record fee for the signature of the 26-year-old Harry Maguire after over a month of talks.
Leicester City will holding out for around £95million to let Maguire leave, but the MEN state that the Red Devils have negotiated that figure down to £80million up-front. He’ll now become the most expensive defender in the world with his medical all set for tomorrow.
Talks with Leicester ‘progressed promisingly’ over the last week, with United intensifying their efforts following an injury to Eric Bailly in the pre-season game against Tottenham Hotspur about a week ago.
Credit where it’s due, the Red Devils have seemingly got their man in the end, and what a top-drawer addition to the squad Maguire will be.
It’s now about getting the deal pushed over the line as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, Maguire will not feature in a pre-season game for United, but if he can get a full weeks training under his belt with his new teammates then that’d be a solid start.
Then, all being well, Solskjaer has a decision to make. Does he throw Maguire straight into the fire against Chelsea? Or ease him in gradually? It’s a tough call…
