Harry Maguire has been named Erik ten Hag’s Man United captain.
We’ve said it time and time again Manchester United Football Club will look rather different in 2022/23. Erik ten Hag has a completely fresh approach to football in comparison to his predecessor. It’s obviously going to take time to implement strategy and tactics.
One thing that will remain the same is the captain. Many fans thought it was a foregone conclusion that the armband would be given to someone other than Harry Maguire.
Well, with the pre-season tour games starting tomorrow, Ten Hag met the media and confirmed that the Englishman would keep the armband.
The Dutchman pointed to Maguire being an ‘established captain’ who has achieved a lot of ‘success’. No doubt this is music to Maguire’s ears.
“Harry Maguire is the captain”, Ten Hag told the media, including the official club website.
“Of course, I have to get to know all the players and it takes time,” said the manager.
“But he is an established captain for a few years and he has achieved a lot of success, so I don’t doubt about this issue.”
The fan view on Maguire has been mixed. I’m of the opinion that the Englishman was struggling for any sort of consistency last season, but there’s a cracking player in there somewhere. Hence, I like the decision from Ten Hag.
Our new boss is backing his man and putting faith in Maguire. Now, it’s down to the Englishman to set the captain’s example and really lead from the front.
It all starts for Maguire on pre-season tour. This is the ideal opportunity for the 29-year-old to start on the front foot and (hopefully) flourish in this Ten Hag possession-based system.
If there’s one thing Maguire has excelled at, it’s passing out from the back…
