Harry Maguire’s Mediocre Mentality

I watched a documentary the other day about Coldplay. Chris Martin was in the studio with the rest of the band and had a new song for them to listen to. “What do you think?” he asked. “Yeah its OK Chris” they replied. Chris could tell they were not feeling it, “You need to be honest with me here guys, there is no room for mediocrity in this band!” Any chance Chris and the lads can give Harry Maguire and the team some lessons on motivation?

After United’s 1-1 draw at the weekend, which they were lucky to come away with a point, our club captain and worlds most expensive defender took on the post match interview duties. Now before I come across as a Maguire basher, I’ll state I’m an admirer of his. I think he commands the air really well, comes out of the defence quickly with the ball and offers a real goal threat from set pieces. Sure he has is comedy moments, and is no way worth his price tag. But it isn’t his fault and he’s greatly improved United’s defence since arriving in 2019. But his mentality and comments in the interview really wound me up…

We all heard the rumours about Bruno being subbed at HT in the 6-1 mauling by Spurs because he kicked off at Maguire. That day, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made a mistake and should have backed Bruno. The man with the winning mentality and desire to push the team back to winning ways. Look what happened when Fergie backed Eric Cantona. I honestly think Bruno would do the same now if he was given the armband. Instead Maguire made some utterly bewildering statements.

“We dominated from the off” – We conceded after 2 minutes. You were there, Harry, you didn’t have your eyes covered like your pal Victor Lindelof…

“We dominated the game” – We had 0 big chances against the team who have conceded the most goals at home in the league this season (32 goals in 12 games) . We had 2 shots in the 2nd half. West Brom had 3…

“We know we aren’t going to come here and create 9/10 chances, that doesn’t happen” – Bottom of the league Sheffield United had 1 big chance and 14 shots against WBA, 3rd bottom Fulham had 3 big chances and 12 shots. We had 0 big chances and 10 shots. Everyone creates 10 chances against The Baggies…

The comment that wound me up the most. What chance do United have in winning anything, if their captain and leader is going into a game against WBA with that sort of mentality! Mediocrity is putting it kindly. The whole team should be geared up for the match and thinking “WBA have been getting smashed lately, they will be low on confidence, we won’t be complacent. We will just dominate them as we are a much better football team.”

I really worry what the mood in the camp must be when we go up against the likes of Manchester City in a couple of weeks. Maybe it explains the capitulation in the Champions League and the inability to get past the semi-final of a cup. I honestly believe if Bruno was made captain the mentality of the team would switch from mediocre to monster. Jurgen Klopp has it right. Sort it out and get the right people leading the lads on the pitch and the image of the club in the media. The fans want to see fire and confidence, not excuses about playing awfully against WBA.

We move on to the Europa league on Thursday and a tough game against another unpredictable United at the weekend. With Chelsea and City games coming up this is a must win if we want to get top 4 this season. See how the mediocre mentality has leaked into the fan mindset? I should be buzzing about the push for the title and the chance to make up ground on City. Instead with Harry at the wheel alongside Solskjaer, I’m hoping we can scrape top 4.

Please Ole, have a word, we can’t be hearing this rubbish again!
