Let’s be honest, I think everyone expected more fireworks from a Manchester United – Liverpool match. The game itself was a damp squib for the most part, with defences coming out on top.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men were extremely resolute, with the standout performance coming from Luke Shaw. The Englishman was absolutely everywhere, winning tackles, fighting for headers, playing the ball forward and working hard.
I’d argue that it was probably his best display given the circumstances, and one that he deserves immense credit for. Dealing with Mohamed Salah so easily is a testament to his overall output. He truly did stand up to be counted.
I have to admit that I’ve had my concerns about Shaw this season, particularly positionally. I just feel that at times he can go wandering, but not today, he was outstanding.
As you’d imagine, the United fans were buzzing about Shaw’s Man of the Match display on social media, and rightly so. It was an afternoon to be proud of and if he can build from that then he should have no problems ensuring that he’s the starting left-back going into next season.
