Manchester United have been sweating on the fitness of Romelu Lukaku all week, with Jose Mourinho unsure as to whether his star striker would be fit.
Now Spanish journalist Diego Martinez has made a huge claim, stating that Anthony Martial will lead the line, with Lukaku taking his place on the bench.
Lukaku has been by far and away United’s best attacking outlet this term, and his 27-goal haul in a debut season has been mightily impressive.
To start the game against Chelsea without him is a huge blow. It’s not just his impressive goal output, but also the wonderful hold-up play, tremendous work ethic and brilliant appetite to drag his teammates through when the going gets tough.
We’ve seen just how badly United struggled without him against both Brighton and West Ham United. No goals were scored, and the attack, quite frankly looked toothless.
It does present Martial with a huge opportunity, though. The Frenchman is adored by United fans everywhere, but for whatever reason, Mourinho doesn’t seem completely sold on the young Frenchman.
If the former AS Monaco man puts in a good performance today, he could well make an early claim to be a regular starter during the 2018/19 season after the World Cup.
