Every year FIFA award the Ballon D’or to that one special player who has outperformed all of his other fellow professionals over the calendar year, but before that an extensive shortlist of over twenty players is drawn up for officials from all over the world to choose from.
One man who hasn’t been included on that list is David de Gea – which is a shocking decision on FIFA’s part. There is just one goalkeeper on the list in the form of Manuel Neuer, and I’d go as far as saying that David de Gea has had an even better year than the German.
Yes, David de Gea was never going to win the award outright anyway, but the fact that his efforts would have been recognised if he had made the shortlist would’ve been great news, as well as a huge confidence booster for the young man.
