Ilkay Gundogan could still switch Dortmund for Manchester

Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachin Watzke refused to rule out the possibility of selling Ilkay Gundogan, but added that he’d like to see the German midfielder pen a new deal at the Westfalenstadion. Manchester United have been reportedly interested in his signature, and these comments could give them renewed hope.

Watzke told goal.com:

“Of course you’re always trying to keep your top players, this is completely normal and we want to extend Ilkay’s contract,”

“But you also have to see a sale as an opportunity.

“In 2011, we lost Nuri Sahin, who was the Bundesliga player of the year and we recovered.

“Ideally, we manage it so that only one top player goes again this year, namely Robert Lewandowski.”

There is no doubt that Gundogan is one of the hottest properties in European football at the moment, with Real Madrid also interested in signing the German international. However concerns are growing about his fitness, having played only three times in all competitions this season due to injury.

I’d certainly take him at United. He’d walk into our first XI when fully fit, and Gundogan alongside Michael Carrick would be something that’d appeal to most Manchester United fans.
