For the last twenty years or so, Manchester United have perfected their trade when it comes to signing young players and turning them into genuine stars.

Old Trafford was always the place to be if you were a teenager. It was the number one destination. If you were given the chance to move to the Theatre of Dreams, there’d be little sense in looking elsewhere.

Sadly, that feels like a thing of the past. There’s now a long line of the next generation choosing to move elsewhere, most notably, Borussia Dortmund. The Bundesliga outfit snatched both Jude Bellingham and Erling Haaland from under their noses – now look at them…

Well, we’ve learned that a third player followed a similar path; Immanuel Pherai. And it comes straight from the horse’s mouth.

The starlet, who joined Dortmund in 2017, has admitted it was ‘pretty easy’ to reject a ‘concrete’ approach from United, in favour of a move to the Westfalonstadion.

“I had offers from Ajax and Manchester United at the time. Only after that, BVB were added. I was confident enough to venture into another country,” he said to Goal in Germany.

“I quickly decided against Manchester, even if the interest was concrete and I was invited there.”

“After I spoke to Dortmund for the first time, the decision was pretty easy, because they showed me a concrete plan and I felt immediately at home.”

Now aged 20, Pherai is yet to make an official appearance for Dortmund, but he’s now been on the bench and in their matchday squad several times. You get the feeling that he could be the next big thing developed by the German giants.

Pherai’s current deal with BVB expires at the end of this season, but typically, he’s open to renewing his terms with a side that has helped develop his potential and hone his talent.

Sadly, this is just further proof that United are no longer the club they were. It’s damning that the Dutchman has admitted how easy it was to choose Dortmund over United. The proof is in the pudding, several players have gone down that route.

Something has to change for the Reds to turn into that number one destination for young players again. Be it a change in manager, style, or even ownership, we have to move in a different direction if we want to be widely-regarded as the best in the business.
