Luke Shaw is in the absolute form of his life right now, so-much-so that there are only two better players in the European game when it comes to chance creation.
Manchester United Football Club have offered up a real mixed bag this season, that much is obvious. From top displays like smashing Southampton 9-0, to being on the receiving end of a 6-1 thumping against Spurs.
It always felt like this squad was probably one year away from challenging for major honours. It’s down to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the United board to get that right this summer.
Anyway, in the meantime, we’ve been enjoying some brilliant individual performances. Bruno Fernandes’ brilliance is there for all to see. However, there are no questions surrounding who is United’s most improved player this season; Luke Shaw.
We’re now starting to see the top ability we thought we were getting when we signed Shaw back in 2014 – and he’s putting in those elite-level displays on a consistent basis.
That said, it’s still a surprise to see the United star having created the third-most opportunities in Europe’s top five leagues in 2021. That deserves massive respect.
Beating out the likes of Kevin de Bruyne, Joshua Kimmich, Lionel Messi and the aforementioned Fernandes in this category deserves huge praise. The scary thing? You still feel like Shaw can further improve.
United have suddenly gone from having no quality down that left-wing, to that side of the pitch becoming our most threatening. That’s solely down to Shaw.
Not only is Shaw getting into the right positions, he’s now showing the quality to whip the right balls into the box at the right time. Sure, it helps when you’ve got a proper target man like Edinson Cavani in the mixer, but the Uruguayan has been absent for a few matches recently.
I’m just created that United have found another world-class player who they can depend on. Slowly but surely, this squad is getting there. In Luke Shaw, United have a left-back they can now depend upon.
