Manchester United have been dealt a huge injury blow, with defender Antonio Valencia sent home from pre-season tour with a suspected torn calf.
That’s according to ESPN, and although they don’t put a time-frame on his return, the man from Ecuador is a doubt to take part in the Red Devils’ Premier League opener against Leicester City on August 10th.
What a shame for the 32-year-old who has just been named new United captain. After an excellent season last time around, the right-back would have been hoping to build upon that, but now, he’s caused Jose Mourinho to have a serious re-think and potentially re-shuffle.
At this point in time, the only senior right-sided defender within the squad is Matteo Darmian, perhaps his hope of remaining at Old Trafford could have been given somewhat of a boost.
Failing that, this problem may cause Mourinho to delve into the transfer market and bring in an extra body. Don’t forget, there is also the talented Timothy Fosu-Mensah who is waiting patiently in the wings to show everyone exactly what he can do.
With just over two weeks until the season gets underway, the manager has some serious thinking to do – but he better act quickly.
