I’ve been surprised at a lack of selling from Manchester United this summer, but I guess when you’ve got a squad filled with underperforming players on high wages, it’s going to be tough to move players on…
Amongst those who have been consistently linked with a move over the last few years is Matteo Darmian. Yes, he’s still here somehow… Anyway, we’ve been given an update on his future over the last 24 hours, and it comes from the usually reliable Gianluca Di Marzio.
He says that Inter Milan are ‘looking’ at the right-back for their defence, with new boss Antonio Conte interested in the 29-year-old. Apparently, if the Serie A giants decide to sell Miranda or Dalbert, Darmian could be an ‘important’ addition to the squad – presumably due to his versatility.
Di Marzio also adds that Juventus are still tracking Darmian, although no mention of an official bid is mentioned.
First and foremost, I’m just surprised that top level clubs are still keen on taking Darmian. He’s barely played over the last couple of seasons, and when he has, the Italian has largely struggled.
At the start of his Old Trafford career, Darmian looked like an astute buy at around £12million, but things fizzled out pretty quickly and I don’t think it’s unfair to say that he has only gotten worse.
Hopefully, United can recoup as much of the £12million as possible, but purely for his sake, I hope Darmian is allowed to move on before the start of the 19/20 campaign.
