Man United hero, Jaap Stam, expects the club to sign Frenkie de Jong this summer.
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for a fair while, you’ll know that Manchester United Football Club have spent the summer chasing Frenkie de Jong.
The Dutch midfielder is widely regarded as the Red Devils’ top target for Erik ten Hag, who sees the FC Barcelona man as the key cog in his midfield. Sadly, the Old Trafford club haven’t acquired De Jong as of yet…
However, Man United icon Jaap Stam still believes the top target ‘will come here’ to the Reds this summer. He also adds that he reckons the club believes the player also ‘wants’ the move. Otherwise, they would’ve ended their chase ages ago…
“At (Manchester United) they know for a long time that Frenkie de Jong wants to come otherwise they would never push this long to get it done.”
“It’s just a money issue for now.”
While it’s comforting to know that Stam has more faith in the club than I do, I just can’t get away from the fact that we’ve spent so long chasing De Jong. At this point, if the move doesn’t happen, this can only be described as an abject failure.
United and Barca have had a deal in place for weeks, though the fact remains that De Jong would prefer to stay at the Camp Nou. I have major concerns about whether the Dutchman actually wants to reunite with Ten Hag here at Old Trafford, with the deal feeling somewhat forced by both clubs without really taking into consideration what the player wants.
Signings like that have burnt us in the past. Is that really a route the Red Devils want to go down yet again…?
At the end of the day, it’s evident that United need to bring in at least one central midfielder during this window. Scott McTominay and Fred stunk up the joint against Brighton yesterday and the Red Devils cannot continue with that partnership for the remainder of the campaign.
Will Frenkie de Jong be that man? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
