Jack Grealish admits he came ‘really close’ to joining Man Utd in 2020

Jack Grealish nearly joined Man United twelve months ago, the attacking midfielder has stated.

Manchester United Football Club have undoubtedly improved their squad under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Right now, this is a group of players who can beat anyone on their day – with the right tactics in place.

Big bucks have been spent on the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Raphael Varane, while Jadon Sancho’s addition felt like another brilliant piece of business.

Well, one man who we’ve been huge fans of for ages is Jack Grealish. I always felt like the former Aston Villa man was tailor-made for Old Trafford. Sadly, he’s now playing for our neighbours down the road…

Now, the top-class 26-year-old has admitted he was ‘really close’ to joining United in the summer of 2020, before sealing his move to the Etihad. Talk about sticking the knife in…

Check out what Grealish had to say on the situation here:

“I was really close to going, but nothing happened in the end,” Grealish told The Telegraph.

“We played United in a pre-season game on Saturday and I wasn’t supposed to play in a cup game at Burton.

“But after the United game I said to Christian Purslow [Aston Villa’s chief executive] and my agent ‘if I’m not leaving, I’ll sign my new contract’.

The Englishman had a top European Championships and he’s only gone from strength-to-strength since Villa returned to the Premier League.

This is a guy who always forces the opposition into fouls, is capable of the spectacular and has a top footballing IQ. Having him in our side would have undoubtedly made us better and it’s a massive shame he ended up just a few miles away playing for them lot.

To hear that United came pretty close to making a move happening, before seemingly pulling the plug, only makes it even more disappointing.

The fact that Grealish was actively pulled from a match-day squad leads me to believe it was seriously close to going through. Forever, I’ll wonder why United decided not to pursue the attacker, particularly when he’s now one of the best in the business at what he does.
