From Toni Kroos to James McCarthy in a matter of 24 hours; According to Sky Sports News, Manchester United are interested in bringing James McCarthy to Old Trafford this summer. The 23-year old cost Everton £13m last summer, and has been at the heart of their midfield all season.
Born in Glasgow, 1990, McCarthy started his career at Hamilton Academical before making the move to Wigan in 2009. He lifted the FA Cup with the Latics in 2013, and then transferred to Everton along with manager Roberto Martinez.
Albeit rather underwhelming going from Toni Kroos to James McCarthy, there would be some logic in the move if it involved a switch with Tom Cleverley going the other way. Roberto Martinez is apparently keen to bring Cleverley to Goodison Park, and if the clubs can sort out some form of swap deal then it wouldn’t be all that bad.
Yes, he wouldn’t be the first name on my list of transfer targets but he’s a better player than the rest of our midfielders in the current squad. Obviously Kroos isn’t available, nor is Kevin Strootman due to injury – so we’ll seemingly have to look elsewhere.
Would you take James McCarthy at United if it involved Tom Cleverley going the other way? Leave your thoughts in the comment box below.

I clicked on your link Jordan (because if you have a link to a story it must be true!!), but it says the story is no longer available. Now I’m all confused. Because you put a link I was sure this story was 100% real, not tabloid bull, but now I don’t know what to think. Please can you find me another link to an absolute load of crap story so I can waste my time reading that!!
The link has since gone dead, Sky Sports have taken down the news article. Don’t shoot the messenger.
£25 million, plus Carrick, Cleverly and Kigawa and you may be getting somewhere close.
Maybe this story has some truth after United supposedly pulled the plug on Kroos, but then i think why would we go for McCarthy if the likes of Fabregas, Vidal, Strootman and Carvalho are on the market? Is McCarthy one of the world class players that Juan Mata was told would join him in the summer, to take us back to the CL where we belong? Or is failing to finish top 4 really haunting us now? The only truth we know at this moment of time is that, Mr Van Gaal spoke and handed United a list of targets a couple of weeks ago and VG himself said: the club is now working on securing those deals. So has McCarthy become a target overnight of has VG changed his mind this week and hand Mr Woodward a new transfer target list? The same channel reported that we made a £27 million bid for Shaw, and a deal should be completed soon, but until now we have heard nothing, so why should we believe this new crap. I say trust only Man Utd official website when a deal is complete!
Van Gaal did also state that there was an a, b and c list maybe Mccarthy is on the b or c list? With the likes of fabregas most likely heading to arsenal strootman injured kroos staying at bayern
Well Sky sports has fast got rid of the farce McCarthy story they reported, yes their might be a plan A, B, C but one thing is certain, McCarthy is not one of those plans!
The answer is 100percent no James McCarthy is much better than Tom Cleverley and you should now that. anyway he as just been reunited with Roberto Martinez at everton so why would he wont to swap I’m tom is a good player and yes I would like I’m at everton I’m am a big everton fan I won’t the big names at everton .people always won’t to have hour players and I don’t no why. Every time we go in for a player there is some one sneaking in to get I’m and that pisses me off
why join a club that finished below his current club in the league and are not even playing European football? He wants to progress his career not go backwards.. Dream on Utd fans!
We’ve got our sites set higher. Funny how Everton suddenly think they’re a bigger and better club than United… They’re not, and not even close.
Not at all. I think Utd are a great club with a proud tradition and a rich history. Just think this story has no legs….like your current midfield!! :) :) :) :)
That’s the mentality that got you in the predicament you’re in now. Thinking you’re better doesn’t play no part on what happens on the pitch, and at the moment it’s Everton who play the better football. That will probably change this year, but having 200m to spend will go a long way in fixing that. So you can then go back to singing how great you are when you outspend everyone in order to achieve “bigger and better things”.
