Man United one of the ‘main options’ for James Rodriguez, player looking to secure transfer

James Rodriguez transfer stories to Manchester United are rearing their ugly head again? Indeed they are…

We’ve been here before, no doubt we’ll end up here again. The latest story we had on the Rodriguez brewing Saga came from Marca a week or so ago. They claimed that United were ‘willing to make an effort’ to sign the Colombian.

Today’s instalment comes from Sport (Monday print edition), translated via Sport Witness. It comes from the player’s side of things this time, which makes this transfer seem like a viable option…

Apparently, the superstar 29-year-old is trying to secure a transfer away from Real Madrid this summer. With United emerging as ‘one of the main options’ for the player.

The good news? A transfer could happen at a ‘reduced rate’. Nope, not due to COVID-19…

The bad news? The lower transfer cost would be so that United can ‘respect his salary’. Rodriguez currently earns a huge £280,000-a-week. Seemingly, the Colombian isn’t willing to take a pay-cut at this stage in his career.

It’s now crunch time for Real. They have to sell Rodriguez this summer or lose him for free in 2021. I don’t doubt that United aren’t the only party sniffing around for his signature, but what about the fit?

Rodriguez’s best position is playing just in-behind the striker. Obviously, that’s currently occupied by the in-form Bruno Fernandes. Right now, it’s the Portuguese’s position to lose and would Rodriguez want to come to Old Trafford and sit on the bench? I’d doubt it.

The 29-year-old can play on the wing but it’s not really a natural position for him. In that regard, the idea of United signing a specialist sounds like the correct option to make – as opposed to making a marquee signing then wondering where to fit him into the team after…

Simply put, the James Rodriguez transfer to United ship has sailed. We have to move in a different direction, just as he has when linked with a Reds switch in the past.
