James Wilson simply has to start against Southampton tonight

Manchester United handed a first start of the season to James Wilson on Tuesday night – the first time his name had been on the team sheet since he started, and scored twice against Hull City in April of last season. The 19-year old striker made a great impression amongst the crowd, so-much-so that he should be awarded his first away start against Southampton tonight.

With Wayne Rooney returning, that leaves one more striking spot up for grabs on a chilly night at St Mary’s. Heres why James Wilson should get that spot:

Louis van Gaal has already ruled Radamel Falcao out of a spot in the line-up, after declaring him ‘only fit for 20 minutes’ at this moment in time. Robin van Persie’s poor run of form continues, and I was extremely surprised to see him last the 90 minutes ahead of James Wilson against Stoke, but I guess its more of a confidence thing rather than basing it on actual performances.

Our boss must now have the guts to drop his beloved Van Persie, and throw the more energetic Wilson in right at the deep end. His work-rates are far superior to Robin van Persie’s, and without doubt we’ll need that energy and fast closing down against an extremely good passing side Koeman has put together.

Wilson thoroughly impressed against Stoke, and he probably should’ve scored in that game. He’s a natural finisher, and given the chance inside the box tonight I’m more than confident he will take it. There is a lot more to his game though, and for a 19-year old he has an excellent all-round game and a superb footballing brain.

We could even see all three of Rooney, Wilson and Van Persie starting, with Louis van Gaal possibly dropping Wazza back into the #10 spot in place of Juan Mata, and using Van Persie up top alongside Wilson yet again.

If its a choice between Wilson and Van Persie, theres only one winner for me. Van Persie hasn’t done enough to warrant a start in recent weeks, and its a true test of Louis van Gaal’s character and trust in youngsters tonight. Soon enough we’ll know who he’ll choose, and whether or not that decision will be correct.
