After slagging off Lisandro Martinez earlier in the season, Jamie Carragher has finally given the Argentine some praise…
Manchester United fans were quick to leap to the defence of their new signing, Lisandro Martinez, back in August, as the former Ajax man came in for heavy fire from Jamie Carragher.
Speaking on Sky Sports after United’s tough loss to Brentford, Carragher went on and on about how he couldn’t see a centre-back of Martinez’s stature working in the Premier League.
Fast forward six months, Martinez has been arguably the best centre-half in the country. He’s turned into a real leader for this team, defending with diligence every single time he takes to the field and added some passion, too.
Now, Carragher has finally given praise to Martinez, though he stopped short of actually apologising to the ‘Butcher of Amsterdam’.
Check out what Carragher had to say in full here:
‘Lisandro Martínez has been brilliant. To be that small and play centre back, you obviously have to be a special player.” Carragher said on The Overlap Fan Debate, per the Daily Mail.
This is as close to an apology as we’re going to get. Martinez has been spectacular since his early season struggles in the opening couple of games. Those poor displays are the exception rather than the rule – which is why Erik ten Hag chose to spend big on bringing him in.
Martinez is now a staple of this United side – and he deserves to be. He’s shutting people like Carragher up with some special, special displays. That’s the best answer to any doubters you have.
Right now, I wouldn’t swap Martinez for any other centre-half in the country – and I do not say that lightly.
