Manchester United’s problems run deep at the moment. They could be about to get far worse if their key players decide to leave following the lack of Champions League football.
Amongst those who could want out is David de Gea. It seems as though the Red Devils are planning for life without the superstar Spaniard, with United eyeing a move for FC Barcelona’s Jasper Cillessen.
That’s according to Duncan Castles in the Daily Record, who writes that Cillessen has emerged as a ‘leading candidate’ to replace De Gea as United prepare for the potential summer exit of their #1.
The 30-year-old shot-stopper has made clear his intentions to leave Barcelona this summer, with the Catalonians looking at a fee of €25m (£22m) to let their goalkeeper depart from the Camp Nou.
With De Gea yet to put pen to paper, it’s only right for United to start doing their homework as they seek their next umber one. I like Cillessen, I think he’s an excellent player, but there’s nobody out there to replace arguably the best goalkeeper we’ve ever had.
In a perfect world De Gea will stay for at least another couple of years, giving United ample time to nurture Dean Henderson into the goalkeeper that we all think he can be.
