Manchester United Football Club need reinforcements this summer. After a strong start following lockdown, it feels like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are now just a few pieces away.

The name linked with an Old Trafford switch today isn’t really what us Reds fans hand in mind, though. Yes, apparently, United are looking at a possible Jeff Hendrick transfer…

It was Football Insider who made the bold claim yesterday, with their sources claiming that United are ‘plotting a shock move’ to sign the 28-year-old on a free transfer this summer.

Hendrick recently left Burnley Football Club after his contract with the Turf Moor outfit expired, rejecting an offer from Sean Dyche’s side in June.

Now, the 20-time Premier League champions are apparently ‘monitoring’ Hendrick’s situation and may make a move to win his signature.

In terms of other interested parties, FI cites interest from Inter Milan, AC Milan and Newcastle United, so winning the battle won’t be easy.

My initial thought is one of confusion. With respect, Hendrick has spent the last nine years playing for Derby County and Burnley. He’s hardly getting any younger and surely, if he was to make a career-defining move, it would have happened already?

I guess the biggest plus is Hendrick’s versatility. He can play anywhere in midfield, out wide or at full-back. Simply put, the Dublin-born-midfielder could be classed as the perfect utility man.

However, I’m just not sure he has the quality. Exactly how many games would he start for the Red Devils? I know he’d be available on a free transfer but I just feel his wages could be spent better elsewhere.

Playing devils advocate again for a second, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made some superb signings thus far, though this one feels a bit out of left-field. One thing I will say is that surely he’s better than Andreas Pereira

Jokes aside, hopefully, United pass up on this transfer, though I wouldn’t completely rule it out due to financial restraints because of COVID-19…
