Jesse Lingard has explained just how upset he was about his mistake vs Young Boys.
Manchester United were shocked by the Young Boys of Bern on Tuesday night. Firstly, I’d like to credit our opponents. They took full advantage of Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s red card.
It’s definitely fair to say our Red Devil’s could have performed better, but that’s football. It happens.
The moment of the match came deep in injury time, when Jesse Lingard left his back pass a little short, allowing Young Boys to score a super-late winner.
No doubt Lingard will be feeling the pain as much as anyone this morning, because after all, he’s a Red through and through. That will never change.
In the aftermath, the United star sent a heartfelt message to the fans, during which he explained just how much he loves pulling on that shirt. He also admitted he was upset for his part in the defeat – but he won’t let that get the better of him.
If I were Solskjaer, I’d be starting Lingard next time out against West Ham, just so he knows that the whole club is behind him. Sure, they’ll be a few idiotic trolls on Twitter who’ll look to badmouth the attacking midfielder – but the majority are backing him all the way and that’s how it should be.
It was one mistake. Yes, it was a bad one, but like Lingard says, it happens. This is a bloke who loves this club like each and every one of us – and he’s done far more good for that badge on his chest than bad.
It’s just a shame that he feels the need to send out an apology to the fans. He shouldn’t feel forced into doing something like that – but that’s just what it’s like in this day and age, sadly.
We’re with you all the way, Jesse!
