In a bizarre story, Jesse Lingard is apparently set to be offered a new long-term deal at Manchester United.
Manchester United seem to be closing in on a deal to acquire Jadon Sancho, further bolstering an attack that is jam-packed with quality.
That likely means one or two players may have to leave. It looked certain that Jesse Lingard would be one of those – though that’s no longer a guarantee.
Yesterday evening, the Daily Star ran a story claiming that the United star Lingard is set to be offered a new 3-year deal at Old Trafford. The Warrington-born-winger has a contract that expires in twelve months’ time, though the club does hold the option to extend that for a further year.
United, though, are looking to protect their asset in the long-term, tying Lingard down to a new deal until 2024 instead. At this point, it remains to be seen whether Lingard will put pen to paper on these terms, which would see his weekly wage rise from £110,000-a-week to £130,000-a-week.
However, Lingard may feel he’s better off leaving the Reds, even if it means he’s on less money, in order to get his career back on track. The Englishman became an outcast under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, leading to a very successful loan move with West Ham.
The Hammers, understandably, want Lingard back, though the £25million asking price and Lingard’s wage demands could be the problem.
At this point, United should just get what they can for Lingard in terms of a transfer fee and cash in now. Has this club not learned from their previous mistakes by handing fringe players new long-term deals? Time and time again, they continue to create problems for themselves, which is a big reason why we’re still one or two steps behind Manchester City at the top of the table…
