Jesse Lingard missed Ralf Rangnick’s first game in charge due to an ankle issue.
Man United played their first game under new management today, with Ralf Rangnick making wholesale changes to both the starting line-up and matchday squad.
The German will have his own ideas and plans, there’s no doubt about that. Over time I’m sure we’ll see further changes made as he gets used to the players and their capabilities.
One man who felt like a surprise omission from the squad yesterday was Jesse Lingard. It always felt like the Englishman would be a perfect fit for the German’s tactics.
Well, now we know why. The Reds have been dealt a blow as the United star twisted his ankle in training, Rob Dawson of ESPN reports.
That explains why Lingard was absent for the Palace game, particularly as I thought the homegrown hero was someone who could well slot straight into the starting line-up for this one.
Hopefully, this isn’t a long-term issue for Lingard, particularly as his contract is winding down and he may well have to make a decision on his long-term future before the end of the January transfer window.
My wish is that Lingard opts to stick it out until the end of the season to see whether he fits in with what Rangnick wants. If that’s the case, there’s every chance he could be given both a new contract and a lease of life.
If he leaves in January, we’ll never know whether he’ll be a mainstay in Rangnick’s team – and that could possibly be a decision he’d forever regret.
Get well soon, Jesse!
