Jesse Lingard has been told that a Man United exit is in his best interests.

Manchester United’s first-team squad has certainly changed a fair bit over the last few seasons. Credit to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who is slowly but surely moulding this squad into one that fits his image.

The dead wood is being cleared out. New stars are being signed. Youth products are continuing to flourish. One player who is at a career crossroads right now is Jesse Lingard.

Our homegrown product has been at the club for practically his whole life, while playing for West Ham on loan last season must’ve been hard. He has returned to Manchester, though sadly, he’s back on the fringes of things whereas with The Hammers, he was amongst their key players.

Now, the £75k-a-week (Spotrac) United star has been urged to leave permanently for his own benefit by none other than Gary Neville.

“Jesse needs to leave for Jesse,” he said on Sky Sports’ The Overlap, per the MEN live blog.

“He got pride last year playing at West Ham. He’s the man there and he’ll come back here [Manchester United] and play 15 games, and be a good squad player, but he doesn’t want that again surely after what he experienced last season.

“Jesse needs to leave for Jesse Lingard.”

Neville has hit the nail on the head. We all love Lingard for his energy and ability. Sadly, he’s just not going to be starting many games in this current United setup and it’s best for all involved if he moves on for good.

Although it’d hurt to see Jesse playing for another Premier League team like West Ham, it’s for everyone’s benefit. United would get a decent transfer fee, Lingard would be allowed to play regularly, while the buying club would be getting a top-class professional.

With time running down in the transfer window, both United and Lingard need to come to a decision that’ll no doubt hurt, but in the long run, it’s something that simply has to happen.

It has been an absolute pleasure watching this man perform for our great club and he’ll always have a place in Manchester United history.
