Joe Hugill has scored a trademark goal for Wigan Athletic, on his first start for the club since leaving Man United on loan.

Manchester United’s pre-season tour has been largely dominated by youth this time around. That tends to happen in a year where there are two major international tournaments taking place across the two biggest footballing continents.

Among those, Joe Hugill. The young striker was involved in the first couple of games for United, scoring a thumping goal against Rangers, reminding everyone of what he can do.

Hugill did jet off to the US with the main tour squad, though he was quickly sent back, in order to seal a loan to Wigan Athletic.

This felt like a great chance for Hugill to play regular first-team football in order to prove his worth and impress both Wigan and United.

Well, as the saying goes, start as you mean to go on… Hugill was in the team as Wigan Athletic took on Tranmere Rovers yesterday. It didn’t take the United loanee long to score a trademark goal on his first start for his new club.

You get the feeling that this is the season where Hugill has to take this chance with both hands and prove he belongs at the highest level. You’re probably hoping for a 20+ goal season from the striker in League One this season.

This is a highly competitive division he’s playing in, for a Wigan side who will be looking to earn promotion by any means necessary. Make no mistake about it, they’ll rely heavily on Hugill to get their goals.
