Joel Pereira confirms move to RKC Waalwijk after leaving Man Utd

Joel Pereira has found himself a new club after leaving Manchester United on a free transfer.

The goalkeeping room at Old Trafford has always been jam-packed with talent, hence why Joel Pereira found it hard to make his breakthrough.

The Portuguese shot-stopper looked like he was the future of this club a few years ago, though the emergence of Dean Henderson, coupled with some excellent performances from Sergio Romero, all-but ended those hopes.

Pereira would have to settle for his minutes away from the Theatre of Dreams on loan. At Hearts and Huddersfield, he’d struggle. Sadly, that was probably the final nail in the coffin for his United career.

This summer, the club chose to let Pereira’s contract wind down. Upon exit, he’d send a lovely message to the club and our fans.

Now, the 25-year-old has announced his new club via his Instagram. He’ll be heading to the Eredivisie to play for RKC Waalwijk.

For Pereira, this represents an opportunity to get his career back on the right path. He’s a very talented goalkeeper in his own right. But at this stage, he has to be playing football on a regular basis.

I just hope RKC Waalwijk can offer him those regular minutes in order to further his development. This is a club that’ll allow him to play without the real pressure that comes with trying to make it at one of the biggest clubs in the world.

In terms of replacement, United have signed Tom Heaton on a free transfer, while don’t forget Lee Grant is also at the club. These guys are excellent goalies within their own rights so, despite the loss of Pereira, the Red Devils still have some more than capable backup options.

I really do wish you the best of luck, Joel!
