Manchester United are yet to dip their toes into the water, though there has been plenty of outgoings. Now, there’s talk of a Joel Pereira loan move.
The Portuguese goalkeeper spent last season on loan with Hearts, now, he’s set for another short-term move away from Old Trafford.
That’s according to The Sun, who state that the 24-year-old United man is set to seal a loan to Championship side Huddersfield Town – as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants him to play games.
At this stage, Huddersfield are keen to tie up the deal quickly, as they look to add a couple of goalkeepers to their squad.
Pereira, who has played three games for United, was once highly-regarded at Old Trafford. However, the emergence of Dean Henderson has meant the Portuguese has slipped down the pecking order again.
The shot-stopper’s deal expires in just one year, so this really is the make or break campaign for Pereira. First and foremost, he has to be playing week-in-week-out if he moves to Huddersfield. Then, the Portuguese has to impress.
Is this just prolonging the inevitable?
It’s hard to picture Pereira remaining at United beyond this current contract. Even if he performs at an unbelievably-high level for Huddersfield, I just don’t see how he forces his way into the team in Manchester.
In terms of development, he’s a couple of years behind the aforementioned Henderson, while the English keeper already has a full Premier League season under his belt. He’s also a year older than Henderson, too.
My thought is that United probably tried to sell Pereira, before realising there was no serious interest in his services. Hence why they’ve had to settle for a loan move, in order to get at least some of his wages off the books for the next twelve months.
