Jonathan Clauss in ‘advanced talks’ with Man United

Man United are apparently in deep talks with Lens over the potential signing of Jonathan Clauss.

A few days ago, there were claims linking Manchester United with interest in Lens full-back, Jonathan Clauss.

Those stories suggested that an approach to acquire the Frenchman had been made by the Old Trafford club, as Erik ten Hag presumably sees Clauss as an upgrade on his current right-backs.

Well, journalist Pedro Almeida took to Twitter yesterday to give us another update on the brewing saga. And it’s a pretty important one.

Apparently, the player is now in ‘advanced talks’ with United, as the Reds look to sign the 29-year-old full-back this summer. As you can see, this feels like a transfer that’s moving really fast, which makes sense given the low transfer fees I’m seeing online (around the £7-10m mark).

Clauss has had a decent couple of years with Lens, even earning four caps for France this year as a result.

What this also tells us is that United could be edging closer to moving on from one of their current right-backs. You get the feeling it’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s head that’s on the chopping block, with Ten Hag preferring Diogo Dalot at this moment in time.

I’m not going to sit here and tell you Clauss is going to be a game-changing addition for united should this deal happen, but I have to be honest about our current right-sided defenders. They’ve been massively underwhelming over the last year or so and the club could absolutely do with an upgrade in that area of the field.

If Ten Hag has identified Clauss as someone who can improve the line-up, while fitting in with the Dutchman’s tactics, then this feels like a no brainer.

Do you think Jonathan Clauss would be a good signing for Man United? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.
