Veteran defender Jonny Evans has left Man United, though he is in talks about coming back as a free agent.

Manchester United Football Club have been struggling defensively over the last twelve months. That’s partly due to injury issues and inconsistencies. A constant change at the back is never a good thing.

One player who pleasantly surprised me last term was Jonny Evans. I was not expecting the Northern Irishman to play anywhere near as many games as he did, though whenever called upon, the veteran was up to the task.

I just assumed he’d be immediately handed a new one-year deal, keeping him at his boyhood club. However, that hasn’t happened.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Evans has now ‘officially left’ the club, though do not fear. He remains in talks about re-signing as a free agent.

Those discussions are continuing behind the scenes as United continue ‘shaking up’ their options in that position this summer.

It does feel like the number one priority right now, as the Reds continue to be linked with several possible transfer targets in that area. Perhaps the Old Trafford side are wanting to get those deals over the line, before deciding what will happen with Evans.

The verdict

I personally think Evans is worthy of another one-year contract. He more than proved his worth last season and I’d have no problem about him dropping into the back four as and when required.

I genuinely do think he’d see far fewer minutes this time around, though that wouldn’t be an issue on United’s part. Let’s be honest we’re talking about a defender who is now approaching the end of his professional career, so any high-level minutes for Evans would have to be viewed as a massive plus.

Let’s hope the parties can come to a mutual agreement sooner rather than later.
