Jose Mourinho and Manchester United accused of disrespecting Anthony Martial during the summer

Over the summer, Manchester United took a huge risk by bringing in Zlatan Ibrahimovic, a 35-year-old veteran who is approaching the latter stages of his career but can still score goals for fun. However, in doing so they risked upsetting one of their up and coming starlets.

Just twelve months ago, a star in the form of Anthony Martial was born. The talented Frenchman cost United £38million, and scored some hugely important goals in his debut season whilst wearing the #9 jersey on his back.

When Zlatan Ibrahimovic came in he was given Martial’s jersey, forcing the young forward to move to the #11. That, understandably caused uproar, particularly when you factor in that nobody had told him about it until it was too late.

Martial’s advisor, Philippe Lamboley has had his say on the situation:

“I am not going to lie about it, it hurt him when Manchester United took the No9 jersey off him. He was surprised by it and he was disappointed for a few days.”

“But he is a professional. He knew that he had to fight back.

“Personally, I did not accept the decision, which I thought was disrespectful and misplaced. I let the United hierarchy know how I felt. You do not do things like that. We have turned the page, but not forgotten about it.”

The 19-year-old has just begun building the ‘AM9’ brand, and it is wrong for United to take that off him without warning. However, for him football must come first, and there is no better way than proving Mourinho wrong by going out and delivering on the field. Let’s hope he can do exactly that.
