Well, they left it late, but Manchester United secured their place in the Champions League knockout rounds last night.
Once again, Jose Mourinho had David de Gea to thank after another simply stunning save that kept United in it, and after the fixture, our manager confirmed something huge.
The self-proclaimed Special One is claiming that he knows De Gea wants to stay at Old Trafford, before throwing shade at the Spaniard’s agent, while also labelling the shot-stopper as the best in the world.
“David de Gea is a world class player. The best goalkeeper in the world. If our ambitions are to be a winning club, you need the best goalkeeper in the world and best other players in the world. I know he wants to stay and the agent wants to do what he wants.” Mourinho told reporters, including the BBC’s Simon Stone.
This is just huge. De Gea has been our best, most consistent player for the last half-decade and we’re lucky to call him our own. If he wants to stay, then United should pay him whatever he wants and get this deal done.
I dread to think where we’d be without him at the moment, so just get De Gea to commit as soon as possible and stop all these rumours about his future. If anyone at this club deserves huge wages, it’s United’s #1.
On the flip side, though, I still wouldn’t blame him if De Gea wants to leave. Let’s be honest, Mourinho press conferences aren’t always totally honest, and if, say, a Paris Saint-Germain comes calling, that may be hard to turn down…
