Jose Mourinho explains Anthony Martial absence, Frenchman an FA Cup final doubt

Yesterday, Manchester United fans were left stunned when Anthony Martial wasn’t included in the Red Devils’ matchday squad against Watford.

The superstar Frenchman was expected to start the game, with Jose Mourinho confirming he planned on using the 22-year-old. However, after his name didn’t appear on the team-sheet, it left us all somewhat concerned…

United went on to beat Watford 1-0 thanks to a goal from Marcus Rashford, but after the game, all the press wanted to talk about was Martial. The self-proclaimed Special One confirmed that the former AS Monaco man picked up an injury during Friday’s training session.

“Anthony, I have to wait a bit for more. It’s his knee,” Mourinho said, per Sky Sports.

“He was injured in the Friday training session and yesterday [Saturday] he could not train. He had treatment in the morning at the training ground and he stayed away.

“I’m waiting for the doctor but when it’s impossible to play today, I have my doubts [for the cup final].”

Knee problems aren’t to be taken lightly, and the fact that he got injured at such a crucial stage in the season tells you absolutely everything you need to know about Martial’s season.

He’s certainly been unfortunate to say the least, and it’d be heartbreaking for Martial if he did miss the FA Cup final against Chelsea next week. The chances of him starting the Wembley showpiece were already pretty slim, but I’d imagine this issue has all-but ended those hopes.

Now it’s a case of whether he can get himself fit for a place on the bench. He is the type of footballer who could make an impact as a late substitute, so hopefully, he can get himself back in time.
