Jose Mourinho explains what to expect from new signing Fred this season

Manchester United made a huge transfer market splurge early on in the window, as Jose Mourinho opted to sign Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk.

The midfielder was with the Brazil World Cup squad over the summer, but he didn’t partake due to an injury picked up in training. Understandably, that left the Old Trafford faithful somewhat disappointed as they didn’t get to see their new man in action.

So, what should we expect from the 25-year-old midfielder? Well, Mourinho has been discussing the new Red Devils man in his pre AC Milan press-conference, and it’s fair to say he’ll be used as a technical, on-ball midfielder rather than playing in a holding role.

People like Nemanja Matic, Marouane Fellaini, Paul Pogba, even Ander Herrera, are physical and strong midfielders, said Mourinho, per ManUtd.com.

“We think that players like Fred, and Andreas Pereira, are more technical, passing and playing in short spaces and maybe connecting with the attacking players.”

“We thought Fred could be an important player for us but let’s wait,”

First and foremost, I just hope that injuries aren’t a sign of the times. We’ve had some rotten luck with people being out on the treatment table recently, and the last thing we need is another body added to that extensive list.

Fred is an exciting player, no doubt he will add a new dimension to our attack, which struggled when creating opportunities at times. The fact that he’s not getting a full pre-season certainly worries me, though, and at this point, it doesn’t look like he’ll be training whatsoever.

The 25-year-old will have to get up to speed quickly which isn’t going to be easy, but hopefully, he doesn’t shy away and he’ll hit the ground running.
